While camping this summer, Jared watched his son Gradey go down to the river, cast his fishing line 5 times, and then walk back to the campsite. Gradey was annoyed he didn’t catch a fish. Jared tried to explain to him that he likely won’t catch a fish that way – you need to be patient and learn. In fact, you might be more likely to catch a fish with your bare hands (which is REALLY hard to do) as long as your patient versus randomly casting your line 5 times and walking away. Gradey’s 13 so he just rolled his eyes.
We have a coaching client (they are actually a couple), and the wife is impatient – she just wants to get out there and buy real estate (she wants to cast her line and get a f*cking fish). She has no patience for creating a plan that includes defining their why, researching different markets, getting their systems in place etc. She hears about a real estate investing strategy on a podcast and just wants to do it. Taking the time to understand how it fits within a bigger plan annoys her – she sees it as slowing her down from moving forward.
This impatience makes her un-trustable to her husband. He wants to understand how everything fits. He sees her as impulsive and doesn’t trust that the decisions she is making are the right ones for them.
She believes the way to gain his trust is to prove him wrong. Instead of slowing down, learning, and getting the structure in place so they are on the same page and he is comfortable, she believes that she needs to move faster, buy property, make it successful and that will prove to him that she is trustable. Her approach to fixing the problem is to do the very thing that is causing the problem in the first place. The truth is no matter what happens with the properties she buys, the trust will be eroded and they will inevitably be set up for failure – both in real estate and in their relationship.
THE TRUTH IS….people are always worried about when the “right time” to buy real estate is. And yes, there are times when the markets are better or worse. But THE TRUTH IS.. success is built on a strong fundamental. If you’ve taken the time to create your plan, it doesn’t matter what the market is like, you’ll make the right decisions – the decisions that get you where you are going the fastest. You won’t be impatiently lunging at fish trying to catch them with your bare hands – you’ll be casting your line where the fish are using the most effective bait.
THE TRUTH IS….. SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO SLOW DOWN TO SPEED UP
